“A Surprise Winner From Coinbase’s Direct Listing? Rapper Nas”, an article in Forbes said in 2021. For two decades, US celebrities – including big names like Kobe Bryant, Serena Williams, Nas, Will Smith or Oprah Winfrey – have been leveraging their networks and likeness to invest in start-ups.
The trend is just picking-up in Europe, where Athletico Ventures advises high profile athletes on how to co-invest in the most promising start-ups – mainly Consumer, Impact and Sports & Media – alongside tier one investors. “Post-investment, we help athletes and start-ups maximize the benefits of this new type of association.”
In 2021, Athletico Ventures closed seven investments in six start-ups (Wethenew, Sorare, Oura, All Plants, Cowboy and Piepacker), with 11 world-class athletes across football, basketball, Formula 1, eSports, etc.
