69th IRENE Seminarco-sponsored by the ESSEC Geopolitics & Negotiation TrackFRANCE, EUROPE and the INDO-PACIFIC ..High stake challengesin times of great power competitionFollowing France, Germany and The Netherlands' Indo-Pacific strategies, the European Union launched in September 2021 its own Indo-Pacific strategy. Responding to emerging dynamics in the region, the EU's engagement in the Indo-Pacific aims at maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific for all while building strong and lasting partnerships. The EU's approach is designed to foster a rules-based international order, a level playing field, as well as an open and fair environment for trade and investment, tackling climate change and supporting connectivity with the EU. With its large maritime domain and a population of over 1.6 million citizens in the region, France has been at the forefront of Europe's engagement in Indo-Pacific and will remain a core player for the years to come. To discuss France's role in the region, ESSEC IRENE has invited Christophe Penot, ambassador for Indo-Pacific who was also formerly ambassador to Australia and Malaysia. As part of France’s presidency of the European Union this semester, Amb. Penot was in charge of organizing a major Indo-Pacific Ministerial reunion on February 22. Also on the panel will be Dr Michito Tsuruoka, Associate Professor at Keio University's Faculty of Policy Management, a well-known authority on Indo-Pacific who will discuss Japan's Indo-Pacific strategy and the ongoing security dynamics in the region.
