Qui sommes-nous ?

Alumni du groupe ESSEC, nous avons créé ESSEC Alumni Business Angels (ESSEC BA) en 2011 pour investir et nous investir dans des projets entrepreneuriaux à fort potentiel de croissance dans tous les secteurs, avec une nette prédominance pour l’économie numérique.  

Notre objectif consiste à entrer au capital d’une start-up en phase d’amorçage (Seed), soit entre un et trois ans après son démarrage, quand les premiers produits sont vendus ou les services délivrés aux premiers clients. Cette période, entre la première levée Friends & Family (argent issu du cercle proche des parents et amis) ou LoveMoney, et l’arrivée des grands fonds d’investissement, reste la plus propice aux décisions essentielles auxquelles nous avons le bonheur de participer avec le comité stratégique ou lors des assemblées générales. Les start-up apprécient autant les conseils que nous leur prodiguons que les apports en capitaux recueillis par notre entremise. Nous nous engageons bénévolement à partager notre expérience et nos réseaux professionnels.

Toutes les deux semaines, nous écoutons entre trois et quatre pitchs (présentation de cinq minutes), avec un temps identique pour les questions. À l’issue de cet important moment pour l’équipe des fondateurs, deux ou trois d’entre nous peuvent décider d’instruire le dossier, soit quelque six à dix heures de travail intense avec la start-up pour examiner tous les aspects de son business. Si le projet retient l’attention des instructeurs, alors nous invitons l’entreprise à revenir devant l’ensemble des BA pour trente minutes en réunion plénière, dont dix minutes d’interrogations sans aucun ménagement. Ensuite, s’ils sont convaincus, certains d’entre nous optent pour engager la somme de leur choix (au minimum 10 k€) et nous entrons en closing (rédaction du pacte d’associés, préparation concrète de l’augmentation de capital, nomination du comité stratégique…)

Notre groupe entretient depuis plusieurs années un excellent partenariat avec le réseau Paris Business Angels (PBA), le plus important club de Business Angels français, fort de 180 adhérents, et dont les deux coprésidents d’ESSEC BA sont administrateurs. Nous participons à toutes les séances de pitch et investissons de concert avec les membres de PBA qui apprécient le dynamisme dont font preuve les ESSEC Alumni BA. Ensemble, nous mutualisons les analyses, échangeons nos expériences et supportons le monde des start-up. Les sociétés que nous finançons lèvent en moyenne 3 M€ par an.

Note : en adhérant à ESSEC Alumni Business Angels, chaque nouveau membre deviendra un membre actif, respectant la double mission de l’association, investir et s’investir. À ce titre, il s'engage à investir chaque année un montant minimal de 20 k€. Chaque membre reconnaît être averti du caractère spécifique et potentiellement risqué de tout investissement dans des entreprises non cotées.

Who are we?

Alumni of the ESSEC group, we created ESSEC Alumni Business Angels (ESSEC BA) in 2011 to invest in and get involved with entrepreneurial projects with high growth potential across all sectors, with a strong focus on the digital economy.

Our objective is to take equity in a start-up at the seed stage, typically between one and three years after its launch, when the first products are sold or services are provided to the first clients. This period, between the first Friends & Family round (money from close relatives and friends) or LoveMoney and the arrival of larger venture capital funds, remains the most conducive to essential decisions, which we have the pleasure of participating in with the strategic committee or at general meetings. Start-ups appreciate both the advice we offer and the capital raised through our involvement. We volunteer to share our experience and professional networks.

Every two weeks, we listen to between three and four pitches (five-minute presentations), followed by an equal amount of time for questions. At the end of this important moment for the founding team, two or three of us may decide to pursue the file, typically investing six to ten hours of intense work with the start-up to examine all aspects of its business. If the project captures the interest of the reviewers, we invite the company to return before all the BA members for thirty minutes in a plenary meeting, including ten minutes of questioning without leniency. Then, if they are convinced, some of us choose to invest the amount of their choice (a minimum of 10,000€), and we enter into closing (drafting the shareholders’ agreement, preparing the capital increase, nominating the strategic committee, etc.).

For several years, our group has maintained an excellent partnership with the Paris Business Angels (PBA) network, the largest French Business Angels club, with 180 members, and whose two co-presidents of ESSEC BA are administrators. We participate in all pitch sessions and invest jointly with PBA members, who appreciate the dynamism demonstrated by ESSEC Alumni BA. Together, we pool analyses, exchange experiences, and support the start-up world. The companies we finance raise an average of 3 million euros annually.

We hold our meetings in Paris every other Wednesday, excluding school holidays, and via video conference as long as health measures require it.
