“Everyone At ESSEC Must Be Accepted in Their Diversity”
Marion Becheri Wurmser has recently joined ESSEC, following her appointment to the newly-created position of Project Manager for Respect of Others. Her task is to lead the fight against all forms of discrimination and violence within the school.
ESSEC Alumni: Could you tell us about your background?
Marion Becheri: I graduated with a Master’s in Human Rights and Humanitarian Action from Science Po Paris, following a degree in Gender Studies at McGill and an International Baccalauréat in the UK. I have experience in the fight against discrimination with the UN and at a local level (city hall and non-profit organisations).
EA: What are your key projects?
M. Becheri: Our priority is to strengthen the management of breaches to the Charter for the Respect of Others, adopted in 2019, by providing enhanced support for victims and calling on professionals for directives to develop disciplinary sanctions. We’re also working on a prevention plan, consisting of awareness and training actions, to fight discrimination upstream. Our next big event is the Gender Equality Days, which coincides with International Women’s Day on 8 March.
EA: What are your long-term aims?
M. Becheri: To change a certain culture of impunity which allows sexist and sexual violence, racism and LGBT+ phobia to persist. Everyone on campus must be able to fulfil themselves, and feel safe and accepted in their diversity. This is a societal issue, given that the students of ESSEC will be the leaders of the future. This paradigm shift cannot happen without the help of all players, including graduates, so don’t hesitate to contact me at: becheri@essec.edu!
RM: What message do you have for the victims or witnesses of wrongful acts?
M. Becheri: I don’t like to talk about speaking out or freedom of speech, because victims have always spoken but society has rarely listened to them. So, my message is this: we are here to listen to you. You can contact me directly, turn to our medical-psychological centre or use our alert platform, safe in the knowledge that it is confidential and all files will be dealt with and followed up on.
