ESSEC Alumni in Qatar: “We Are Diversifying Our Economy Away From Hydrocarbons”

Maryam Mohammed (MBA 13), President of ESSEC Alumni’s Qatar Chapter, tells us more about the local community – and the activities she offers to them. If you are a graduate or a student in the area, join their online group!

ESSEC Alumni: How long have you been living in Qatar?

Maryam Mohammed: I was born here and I have spent most of my life in the country although I have had the opportunity to live in a few other cities. I am currently the Director of International Cooperation at the Qatar Financial Centre Regulatory Authority (QFCRA), an independent regulator established to authorise and regulate firms and individuals conducting financial services in or from Qatar.

EA: What sets your country apart according to you?

M. Mohammed: One of the best aspects of living in Qatar is that it is extremely safe. People normally leave their keys in their cars and do not lock their houses. Also, you can get most government services done through an app. For example, if you need to renew your driving license, it is just a few clicks away to being delivered to your house. Last but not least, there is no income tax.

EA: What is the economics and/or politics climate currently in Qatar?

M. Mohammed: Qatar’s vast gas reserves have elevated its GDP per capita to one of the highest in the world. However, to achieve long-term success, the government is working towards the diversification of the economy away from hydrocarbons, under the guidance of the Qatar National Vision 2030 (QNV). The development of these new projects opens many potential opportunities in such fields as logistics, tourism, new technologies, finance, healthcare, and solar energy. It also attracts many startups.

EA: What practical advice do you have for our alumni interested in Qatar?

M. Mohammed: Most people only perceive Qatar through its portrayal in the media so my advise is to speak to Qatari and expats who live here to get first hand advice of the positive aspects and challenges of moving here. On a very practical note, I would not advise anyone to move here in the summer unless you are prepared to experience over 40-degree Celsius heat!

EA: What is the offer of ESSEC Alumni's Qatar Chapter

M. Mohammed: We cater to people in Doha as most live here, given the small size of the country. We aim at launching events every six weeks, including meet ups with other French schools (INSEAD, HEC) since each usually has only a small number of alumni in the area. We also share news and views on our Whatsapp group.

EA: What are your projects for the Chapter?

M. Mohammed: I hope to foster a sense of community among our alumni and provide new comers to Qatar with a space to connect. I welcome volunteers to join and help me in developing our offer. Feel free to reach out!
